Weekend Concierge

Dec 192016

This is the page we update every week showing you which bars and restaurants are the best ones to find a band on both Friday and Saturday nights but due to Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, some of those same places have decided to forgo live entertainment, even if they may remain open.  Rather than shortening the list, we decided to double check with each of those places to give you an at-a-glance view of where you’ll find a full stage and where you’ll find an empty one this weekend. By the way, the first night of Chanukah also falls on Saturday, December 24th but that was never a reason for anyone to cancel a gig – just a piece of trivia we wanted to throw out there because nobody else mentions it even though it’s a “Holiday” too!

presidential-suite-margaritaville

Every year, we come across extraordinary New Year’s Eve packages put together by aspiring marketing departments who either want to make our mouths water with envy or target the 1% who may be wealthy enough to have unlimited budgets but lack enough creativity to put together their own plans on how best to celebrate this literally annual event.  This year, the prize goes to Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort with what they call the  “It’s a Thin Line Between Saturday Night and Sunday Morning” Suite Package starting at $22,500 per night.   A two-night minimum stay is required so we’re talking about a $45,000 commitment!  Well, we’re not so sure how “laid back” this package really is with that kind of a price tag!

Guests who book the package for a stay in the Jimmy Buffett Presidential Suite or Coral Reefer Vice-Presidential Suite will enjoy the following:

  • Luxurious accommodations atop the highest floor of the 17-story resort, with private balconies facing both the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway
  • Round-trip limousine transfers between the resort and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, just minutes away
  • A stocked suite with a full premium bar including beer, wine, liquor and mixers
  • An en-suite, five-course dinner hosted by the resort’s executive chef with pairings from JWB Prime Steak and Seafood (for up to eight people)
  • A private poolside cabana each day with beer, wine and unlimited margarita pitchers
  • A private yacht charter along the Intracoastal Waterway, complete with an open bar and canapes (for up to 12 people)
  • A luxury Margaritaville swimwear makeover for two from the resort’s ‘Live Life Like a Song’ retail store
  • An en-suite Bloody Mary bar and bartender to sooth the morning after blues
  • One Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker® for creating the perfect party drinks

Note: Reservations must be made at least seven days prior to arrival.

Now that we have completely shocked you with a sticker price of $45,000 for two nights, here’s something a little more affordable.

JWB Prime Steak and Seafood, the resort’s coastal-luxe restaurant concept, is offering a special five-course menu for New Year’s Eve for $175 per person. Highlights of the menu created by Executive Chef Andres Teran include pan seared scallop over English pea purée and shallot gastric; bouillabaisse, a seafood stew with clams, mussels, shrimp and fresh catch with grilled ciabatta; and wine-poached pear with moscato zabaglione, among others. A wine pairing is available for an additional $50 charge. Diners can enjoy party favors, live entertainment and a champagne toast at midnight. JWB will host two seating options – the first will be an à la carte seating at 6pm and the second will be the prix fixe menu seating from 9pm to 1am.

With multiple unique on-site food and beverage outlets, guests and locals alike can also choose to celebrate New Year’s Eve at Margaritaville Restaurant, 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill or LandShark Bar & Grill with live music, party favors and a champagne toast at midnight being offered in each venue. There will also be a pop-up champagne bar in the resort’s lobby from 5pm to 1am.

fountain-flame-pompano-untapped

On December 2nd,  Pompano Beach will become the first city in the United States to ignite a “Fountain Flame”.  The initial lighting will take place during the monthly Old Town Untapped event across from Bailey Contemporary Arts in Old Town Pompano Beach. The dramatic display is set ablaze when propane is injected into the water, igniting into dazzling flames that dance atop the sprouting flumes of water. Kim Briesemeister and Chris Brown, founders of Redevelopment Management Associates, wanted to create a great public space ensuring a central gathering spot for reviving downtown. The technology, a nationwide first, is part of their transformation of Pompano Beach into a leader in innovation.

“Pompano Beach is quickly emerging as a national redevelopment model,” said Briesemeister. “The reinvention of the city is focused on securing the best of the STEAM disciplines, with a strong emphasis on blending art and technology. This “Fountain Flame,” located between three new arts venues, is an outstanding example of small towns setting the trends.”

The “Fountain Flame” technology was developed by OASE-Living Water, based in Germany. The Pompano Beach fountain will be the first that utilizes a low voltage ignitor to combine fire and water in a theatrical application in a public place. The fountain works by introducing high pressure propane gas into the stream of water. Once the propane is inside the stream, the low voltage ignitor ignites the propane stream in the water jet to start the fire show.  The fountain also has numerous LED light displays which enhances the stunning visual effect.

RMA assembled a stellar construction and design team to certify and build the fountain. “Our vision wasn’t deterred when we were informed that it couldn’t be built in the US,” said Briesemeister. “Our team worked with national and local fire safety experts to create guidelines and obtain UL certification for this new technology.” As a safety precaution, the fountain is surrounded by infrared beams, if the plane is broken, the gas valve is shut off and the water and propane flow stops.

Burkhardt Construction is the contractor who led the streetscape improvements within Old Town. EDSA, a landscape architecture firm, led the overall design, hardscape layout and concept for the fountain. EDSA also led the multidisciplinary team of consultants for the project, includingHall Fountains, Delta G, Keith and Associates, and Mausen.

This month, Old Town Toasts the Holidays with a festive night including a special holiday performance by the 65 piece American Legion Symphonic Band, sponsored by Brightstar Credit Union and the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Performances by Jazz great Randy Corinthian, acoustic music by Ike Woods, plus over 50 holiday vendors, food trucks, art displays, craft beer tastings, specialty drink, a scavenger hunt and much more. The event is free and open to the public. Lighting ceremony is scheduled for 7pm.

hollywood candy cane parade

Now in its 61st year, the Candy Cane Parade returns to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. to delight thousands of spectators of all ages and usher in the holiday season in Hollywood!  The Candy Cane Parade on Hollywood Beach is one of the longest running holiday parades in the country. It was started back in the mid-1950’s by a group of Hollywood merchants as a way to draw patrons to their shops and businesses. Today it features imaginative lighted floats and vehicles, marching bands and dance troupes with parade participants tossing out candy canes and mints all along the parade route.

Musical Notes and Peppermint Floats

This year’s parade theme is “Musical Notes and Peppermint Floats.” The parade gets underway rain or shine at 7:00 p.m. on the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk at Scott Street and heads south to Harrison Street. Complimentary bleacher seating is available along the parade route from Garfield Street to Polk Street. Parade emcees will be stationed at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street.

To ease traffic, parade-goers are encouraged to park in one of the downtown parking garages and take the free parade shuttles to and from the beach from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The downtown parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Standard parking rates apply. The Candy Cane Parade is presented in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency.

jd-and-straight-shot

Americana band JD & The Straight Shot – featuring vocalist/guitarist Jim Dolan whose voice the New York Post calls “reminiscent of Tom Waits and Randy Newman,” bassist Byron House (Robert Plant, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton) and violinist/fiddler Erin Slaver (Martina McBride, Rod Stewart) – are set to kick off the new year on tour with legendary artist Don Henley. The trek starts on January 14th in Austin, TX at Austin City Limits Live.

JD & The Straight Shot are currently working on their forthcoming album due out in early 2017. The achingly beautiful first single “I Know, You Know, I Know” gives an exciting taste of what’s to come. The sparkling ballad produced by Chuck Ainlay (Mark Knopfler, Miranda Lambert), was written by Dolan, Slaver and Marc Copely (B.B. King, Rosanne Cash) with sweeping accordion melodies performed by Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow, Levon Helm, Saturday Night Live band). The new song was a rousing audience favorite along JD & The Straight Shot summer 2016 European tour dates with Don Henley and U.S. shows with Joe Walsh.

JD & The Straight Shot spent 2016 touring nonstop in support of their highly praised all-acoustic album Ballyhoo!. Neo Music Scene raves, “Ballyhoo! is a refreshing record that gets back to the roots of great American music,” I’m Music Magazine gushes the album is “A tasty slice of Americana music at its finest,” The El Vee enthuses, “JD & the Straight Shot mix blues, folk, and Americana styles into a timeless American music sound of their own” and Music Matters Magazine calls the record “a listening pleasure.”

In addition to touring with Don Henley and Joe Walsh, JD & The Straight Shot have played alongside luminaries such as the Eagles, Keith Urban, the Dixie Chicks, Jewel and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. New England Music News declares, “Awesome is the word” for JD & The Straight Shot’s live show.

Don Henley, both as solo artist and as a member of the Eagles, has received many accolades, including eight GRAMMY Awards, numerous gold and platinum records and performed sold-out concert tours worldwide. A respected, popular and critically celebrated musical artist, Henley is a founding member, vocalist and songwriter of the Eagles that has become one of the most influential bands in America. Henley’s solo career is acclaimed with such hits as “Dirty Laundry,” “Heart Of The Matter,” “Boys Of Summer,” “The End Of The Innocence” and “All She Wants To Do Is Dance.” He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, and will receive the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors later this year, as a member of the Eagles.
