Kick off the new year on a high note with plenty of home-cooked classics, cold suds, and award-winning blues during Blue Tuesdays at the oceanfront hot spot Boston’s on the Beach in Delray Beach.  Famous Frank Ward hosts Blue Tuesdays with an ever-changing lineup of some the greatest blues musicians and guests. With his uncanny knack of matching up tremendous talent from both sides of the Mississippi, it turns Boston’s into an intimate and “smooth” venue for a perfect evening of blues.

Blue Tuesdays’ performances in January include:

January 10: Albert Castiglia is in the house! Castiglia is a notable artist who sings from the gut, shoots guitar licks from the hip, and writes songs that articulate one’s hopes, fears, and inevitable heartaches. Possessing a vocal style like Van Morrison, online music database AllMusic noted, “Castiglia combines hardcore blues with soul, rock, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and blues purists alike.”

January 17: The Terry Hanck Band. Composed of front man Terry Hanck, guitarist Johnny Soubrand, drummer Butch Cousins, and bass guitarist Tim Wagar, blues fans are in for a musical treat! “This Chicago native, now based in South Florida, is steeped in the blues and soul genres. As a musician, singer, and songwriter, Hanck’s choice of material and his presentation are impeccable,” wrote Elmore Magazine’s Bob Gottlieb of Hanck. “If soul and blues are your bag, grab this.”

January 24: The Chris O’Leary Band. The Chris O’Leary Band, all living in New York’s musically rich Hudson River Valley, worked with producer Dave Gross in his Fat Rabbit Studios to create “Waiting for the Phone to Ring.” Fat guitar and harmonica tones, pumping horns, keys, background vocals, upright bass, and drums, fall in behind O’Leary’s naturally powerful vocals. All 13 songs are Chris O’Leary originals, showcasing moving and incisive lyrics layered over killer grooves that ooze vintage cool.

January 31: The Chris Duarte Group. An artist’s lifetime is often dictated by the heights they reach. For American guitarist, singer, and songwriter, Chris Duarte takes fans up to heavenly heights with his signature Texas blues-rock style. Duarte, who credits Stevie Ray Vaughn and John Coltrane as musical influencers, is joined by Dustin Sargent on bass and John McKnight on drums.

Blue Tuesdays also features great food and drink specials, including juicy burgers and jumbo chicken wings, signature lobster rolls, and our “famous” New England pot roast served with creamy mashed potatoes and fresh, seasonal vegetables.

Blue Tuesdays’ performances on the Boston’s stage are from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., every Tuesday evening. No cover. For more information about Blue Tuesdays’ performances, please visit us online at bostonsonthebeach.com/bluetuesdays or call 561.278.3364. Boston’s on the Beach is located at 40 S. Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach, Florida 33483.

Cold Shot

Love to relive the 80’s with favorite pop-rock bands but can’t wait for them to re-appear at a local concert venue?  The next best thing is practically free with tribute bands performing this month all over South Florida.  Not sure where to find them – well we’ve got you covered with yet another list that you will want to keep handy all month long!

JANUARY TRIBUTE BANDS IN BROWARD & PALM BEACH COUNTY

January 6, 2017 – Crazy Fingers has been performing their Grateful Dead tribute for many years.  In fact, you can consistently see them every Sunday evening at Boston’s on the Beach which they have coined Grateful Sundays.  On Friday January 6th, they are taking their show “on the road” so to speak at Boca Raton’s Funky Biscuit (ticketed event).

January 7, 2017 – Chain Reaction’s tribute to Journey and Forever Styx (hmm… tribute to who?!) will take turns at Margate’s Sounds at Sundown concert series – a monthly food truck and community event located on the corner of Margate Blvd and 441 in Margate.  Just down the road at Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio Bar, you’ll find Lifeline’s tribute to Heart.  In Boca Raton, you can catch The Long Run with their Eagles Tribute at the beautiful Sunset Cove Amphitheater.   Further North, Solid Brass will be performing a tribute to Chicago and other brass rock bands at Wellington Amphitheater.

January 8, 2017  – Simon & Garfunkel tribute presented by the Guthrie Brothers at Boca Black Box.  Tickets are only $15 when you use our half-price tickets link.

January 14, 2017 – The Shindigs present a tribute to The Beach Boys at Sabal Pines Park in Coconut Creek – a new setting for the Home Grown Concert Series which has outgrown the community center where it was held up until now. Concert starts at 7pm although a BBQ food truck will be on hand an hour earlier if you’d like to grab something to eat.

True Rumours performs a Tribute to Fleetwood Mac at Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio Bar in Pompano Beach. There’s no charge to attend and they have a full menu of dinners, small bites and full liquor bar out on the patio. Further north, Fire & Ice pay tribute to Pat Benatar at the Wellington Amphitheater.

Attendees of Eats ‘n Beats at Parkland’s Pine Trails Park will get a taste of Country and Rock and Food Truck fare when Kristen Spencer sings with the Rough Shot Band followed by The Boss Project’s tribute to Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band.

January 21, 2017 – Doors Alive pays tribute to Jim Morrison and The Doors at Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio Bar in Pompano Beach. Also the same night, Derek Villegas and The Fast Forward band pay tribute to Kenny Chesney at Betti Stradling Park in Coral Springs.  DR Smokehouse will be serving BBQ from their food truck starting at 6pm while the concert starts at 7.

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather on the originally scheduled date of January 7th, the Sounds at Sundown concert & food truck event in Margate was rescheduled to Saturday, January 21st.  January’s featured band is Chain Reaction, a Journey and Styx Tribute band fronted by the vocal talent and Steve Perry sound-alike, John D’Agostino.

January 26, 2017 – This weekly Food Truck rally takes place on Thursdays and this week will be especially lively with a tribute to Neil Diamond.

January 27, 2017 – Eddie Jelly and Cold Shot will amaze you with their tribute to guitar legends Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix.  You never know what else he might throw in there – you’ll sit back and stare at the authenticity! This is part of a double-shot weekend of tributes at Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio Bar in Pompano Beach.

January 28th, 2017 – Galuppi’s is bringing back Titans of Rock’s tributes to Journey & Bon Jovi, each with their own set and costumes too!

Weekly shows:

Monday nights at Fishtales Restaurant & Nightclub in Fort Lauderdale – discover different impersonators of your favorite legendary musicians while dining with different acts each week.  January features one-man tributes to Tom Jones, Bon Jovi, The Blues Brothers, Buddy Holly, Frankie Valli, Dion, Bobby Darin & more!

Tuesdays at Johnnie Brown’s in Delray Beach and Wednesdays at The Field Irish Pub in Dania Beach, you’ll find a sometimes comedic tribute to Rod Stewart by impersonator, comedian and singer George Orr with The Hot Rod Band.  Also Tuesdays, at The Field Irish Pub, you’ll find The Two of Us duo performing a Lennon/McCartney Beatles tribute.

There is a certain thrill that comes along with finding a hidden entrance to any place that offers something unique which otherwise could not be seen by the average guy on the street just passing by a barely marked entranceway.  This past week, I was a invited to Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s newest member to join a very small group of “hidden gems” located in the Riverwalk or Himmarshee square-mile district.   They are sometimes called “Speakeasies” which is a throwback to the times when the sale of alcohol was prohibited and you could only find the bar or saloon through word of mouth.  According to Wikipedia, “Speakeasies largely disappeared after Prohibition was ended in 1933, and the term is now used to describe some retro style bars.”  So here’s a rundown of the three I visited last Wednesday night, all within walking distance of each other:

  1. Stache
    Ella Herrera

    Ella Herrera at Stache

    – Opened in 2013, this place calls itself a “1920’s Drinking Den + Coffee Bar” which is immediately apparent once you see the decor inside this hidden gem.  Stache consists of two bar areas on the bottom floor and a mezzanine furnished with leather chairs, antique couches,  a pool table and a 3rd bar with a perfect view of the stage area below. In addition to live music by indie artists and featured DJs playing the latest in electronic and tech, Stache offers unique events on many nights including Whiskey Tastings and Charity Events.   Stache shares both ownership and joining walls with neighboring venues Revolution Live and America’s Backyard.  When you find your way to either venue at 100 SW 3rd Ave, walk around the side of the building around to the rear and you’ll see the entrance marked simply with a mustache painted on it.

  2. apothecary 330

    Tamara at The Apothecary 330

The Apothecary 330 – Another favorite hidden gem which I discovered while being invited to a bloggers meetup has only one bar and no stage area but very well decorated and an intimate setting to meet one or more friends.  I set my GPS to the address of 330 SW 2nd Street and drove around twice without being able to find a sign for The Apothecary.  Finally, I parked my car and walked up to a gentleman cleaning up outside of Pizzacraft Pizzeria who told me that I had to enter via the restaurant.  Boy was I relieved to find this place and amazed at how hidden away this beautiful one room bar and lounge was from street view.  Since it shares the space with PizzaCraft, you can order anything offered by the restaurant which includes many unique baked items and combine your experience with handcrafted and many old fashioned beverages from the extensive collection of fine spirits you’ll find stacked from floor to ceiling at the bar.  True to its’ name, drinks are prepared just the way you would see a pharmacist prepare medicine back in the 1800’s, hence the name The Apothecary.   However, I can assure you that these will taste a lot better!  Sit back at the bar and enjoy the show as friendly bar staff chat with customers and prepare drinks with great care and intensity.

  3.   Cash Only – Officially opened to a VIP guest list of several hundred, this venue is probably the largest of the three hidden gems mentioned here.  The name “Cash Only” can be deceiving and confusing to some, yet perfectly clear once you visit and understand that the entire venue harkens to the 1970’s just before the era of plastic overtook cash as the primary means of paying for goods and services. Ironically, you’ll have to climb to the second floor when you’ll find a lounge decorated as a 1970’s vintage Northern-State “Basement” completed with woodgrain paneled walls, an arcade video game, LP’s and 8-tracks on a bookshelf and some comfy couches.  The downstairs bar features a large stage area and more vintage decor include a wall of 8-track cassettes, a giant size can of TAB cola and a huge sign hanging from the ceiling that says “Cha Ching”.  You’ll find the entrance located near the Alleyway of The Tilted Kilt located along Andrews Avenue near the Riverfront shopping district.

This is the page we update every week showing you which bars and restaurants are the best ones to find a band on both Friday and Saturday nights but due to Christmas falling on a Saturday this year, some of those same places have decided to forgo live entertainment, even if they may remain open.  Rather than shortening the list, we decided to double check with each of those places to give you an at-a-glance view of where you’ll find a full stage and where you’ll find an empty one this weekend. By the way, the first night of Chanukah also falls on Saturday, December 24th but that was never a reason for anyone to cancel a gig – just a piece of trivia we wanted to throw out there because nobody else mentions it even though it’s a “Holiday” too!
