dropouts new years eve

It’s always amazing to see how bars transform themselves into the cleanest and most classiest places to hang out when it comes to celebrating the New Year! No matter how fancy it gets, you can usually feel comfortable in your best or your worst pair of jeans and be perfectly welcome at any of the places on this list.  For some of us, the best thing about going to a bar on New Year’s Eve is that you don’t have to take a date.  While it can be embarrassing for some people to attend a New Year’s ball or masquerade party at a swank place all alone, you really don’t have to worry about that when it comes to the places on our list.  With few exceptions, you won’t break the bank with cover charges or entry fees.  In fact, most of the places we surveyed will even throw in a free glass of champagne and maybe some noise-makers at the stroke of midnight. One bar, Cagney’s Saloon in Davie, even offers a free breakfast buffet!

dropouts new years eveWe, in South Florida, are privileged to have so many talented musicians in our midst that are so dedicated to their artistry that they will give up a special night with their significant others or families to entertain us at local pubs and restaurants – although a few extra bucks doesn’t hurt either!  Call it dedication if you will, but the bars and restaurants around town see it as one last opportunity to bring patrons to their establishments in the middle of the week when their places are usually half-empty on a Wednesday night.

Although this list is, by no means 100% complete, I can honestly recommend that you check out the beautiful flyers that will be streaming across your screen on the Weekend Broward Events Around Town page.  You should also find more listings on the calendar for Broward County on the Live Music Events page.  Look for the asterisk (*) as a reminder to click on the event notes. Whether you decide to go out or stay in, let me take this opportunity to thank you for supporting live music in and around Fort Lauderdale and wish you all the best in 2015!

JP Soars The Redhots

Now that the Riverwalk Blues Festival has come and gone, you need not wait another year to enjoy some of the best Blues bands in the Fort Lauderdale area.  What follows are some of the bands and locations where you will find some of the very same musicians that played at this weekend’s highly successful event in downtown Fort Lauderdale, as well as a few more that I can recommend.

Starting on Monday night, enjoy the sounds of Joey Gilmore at Blue Jean Blues on NW 33rd St, off A1A and Oakland Park Blvd.  Directly across the street, Wednesday night is always a Blues Jam night at Fishtales, hosted by Bobby Nathan.  Friday night at Fishtales will feature Jimi Fiano and the Moderunners, another great jam band.

RIPS Blues Weekend

Coming to a bowling alley bar near you, RIPs Sports Bar in Pompano will present the sounds of Joey Gilmore, Albert Castiglia and Rosco Martinez this coming Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights respectively. If you miss Albert on Friday, you can catch him again the following week at Maguire’s Hill 16 on February 28th.

On Saturday night, you can enjoy Josh Rowand & the Pitbull of Blues at The “Historic” Downtowner Saloon, directly across the river from where the Blues Festival was held this past weekend.

Another local favorite, Dave Shelley & Bluestone will return to the scene after a brief absence beginning March 1st at the Mardi Gras Casino in Hallandale.

Last, but not least, The Dubliner Irish Pub in Fort Lauderdale will play host to Bryan Lee on March 2nd, JP Soars & The  Red Hots on March 16, Biscuit Miller & The Mix on the 23rd and Brandon Santini on the 30th.

Special thanks to www.jazzbluesflorida.com for providing the schedule for The Dubliner since I could not find listings on either their website or Facebook page.  I would definitely recommend JazzBluesFlorida as a great source for both Jazz and Blues anywhere in the State of Florida. In fact, I only listed a few of the many Blues happenings around town just to give you a sense of how widespread this genre of entertainment happens to be in and around Fort Lauderdale.  Aside from the last set of suggestions, all of the acts mentioned were listed on the Live Music Events Calendar at WeekendBroward.com.

If you have any more to add, please feel free to send them myway!

‘see you somewhere soon!
