hard rock rising

2015  marks the 7th year that the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood Florida participates in Hard Rock Rising global battle of the bands.  More than 400 bands submitted registration via Reverbnation to participate in the local battle which gets under way during the month of April at the Hard Rock Cafe located inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.  12 bands from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties were selected to participate. Three bands will play each Friday night in April at the Cafe with the local finale to take place on May 1st.

Each band will perform a set of 3 original songs and one song covered by a previous Hard Rock Calling band.  Hard Rock Calling was a music festival sponsored by Hard Rock Cafe international between 2006 and 2013 which featured some of the biggest names in Rock including  The Killers, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, The Who, Bon Jovi, Roger Waters (with Nick Mason), The Police, Aerosmith, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.  Bands will be judged locally by three local industry experts based on originality, musicianship, vocal skills and fan appreciation.

The winning band in Hollywood, Florida will receive a prize of $1,000 and be eligible to move on to the regional phase of the competition. In the regional phase, Hard Rock Cafe International will select 5 bands from all the participating Cafe’s who will be flown to Barcelona, Spain this Summer to compete in the final live battle event on July 23rd. The grand prize winner will be announced that day at Hard Rock Rising Barcelona!

Members of each of the 12 local bands met with Hard Rock Cafe staff in March to determine which band would play which dates by a random number being selected from a hat.  Of the 12 bands, one of them is last year’s winner, 13th Floor, and last year’s runner-up Raine.

Here is a tentative schedule which was available at press time for competition in Hollywood, Florida.  Each round will begin at 9pm.

Butterfly Festival Outdoor Concerts

If you’re looking for some great free outdoor entertainment in the next few months, just follow the trail of Food Trucks which often accompany the live music and family friendly events which go hand in hand at parks and amphitheaters administered by cities such as Sunrise, Margate, and Parkland.  By using the Food Truck calendar  found on this website and event blogs I found on, I was able to piece together the following cheat sheet for outdoor concerts around Broward over the coming months.

City of Sunrise Civic Center

Friday, March 20: The Long Run – a tribute to the Eagles*

Friday, April 17: Turnstiles – a tribute to Billy Joel*

City of Margate Sounds at Sundown (Corner of Margate Blvd and 441)

Saturday, February 7 – Orange Sunshine (Tribute to 60’s Music)

Saturday, May 2 – Home Town Hero

Saturday, August 8 – Sekond Nature (Rock and Pop)

Saturday, September 19 – Studio 54 (Disco)

City of Coconut Creek

The City of Coconut Creek offers two upcoming opportunities to experience great entertainment on an outdoor stage.  The community center usually has only one food truck on site each month.  The Butterfly Festival is an annual affair with many vendor booths on site and multiple bands playing all day long.

Coconut Creek Community Center

Friday, March 13 – Andrew Morris Band (Country & Southern Rock)

Friday, April 10 – Orange Sunshine (Tribute to 60’s Music)

City of Lauderhill

The City of Lauderhill has two venues which they are using for providing live entertainment to residents.  A Small stage is situated at the Amphitheatre of the Lieberman Botanical Gardens at 3801 Inverrary Blvd.  They have been holding “Jazz Picnic in the Park” there since last December. Tribute Band Concerts will take place at the much larger Lauderhill Sports Park at 7500 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

City of Hollywood

Lastly, Kudos to the City of Hollywood for organizing outdoor concerts large and small at three different venues they operate.  My personal favorite is ArtsPark located at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood.  Here is a sampling of what you can expect to see coming up in the months ahead:

About Imagine Dragons

Formed in 2009 by Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman, Imagine Dragons earned a grassroots following by independently releasing a series of EPs. After Alex Da Kid signed them to his KIDinaKORNER/Interscope label, the band made its major-label debut with the release of Continued Silence, a 2012 EP featuring the 2x platinum breakthrough single “It’s Time.” The band’s double-platinum album Night Visions arrived later that year and Imagine Dragons found themselves on a skyward trajectory that saw the album debut at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, sell nearly four million copies worldwide, and became the No. 1 album on Spotify Worldwide for 2013. Night Visions’ second single, the 9x platinum “Radioactive,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Rock chart and earned the band a 2014 Grammy for “Best Rock Performance.” It is the best-selling rock song in U.S. digital history. The third single, “Demons,” hit No. 1 at Alternative and Top 40 radio, and has sold 3.9 million copies in the U.S. The band has sold more than 24 million tracks worldwide.

About the Tyler Robinson Foundation

The Tyler Robinson Foundation begins with the story of Tyler – one of many heroes who chose not to let his prognosis dictate his outlook on life. At 16-yearsold, Tyler was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.  In the following year leading up to his passing, he was able to touch countless lives. Those who knew Tyler were inspired by his courage, and his insistence on enjoying life and spreading happiness despite the physical and emotional strain of living with cancer. Determined to continue Tyler’s legacy of creating something positive despite the odds, his family and members of the band Imagine Dragons (who had grown close to Tyler) came together to create the Tyler Robinson Foundation. Some people say that Tyler lost his battle with cancer, but we couldn’t disagree more. The real battle is not whether you live or die, but how you respond to the challenge. Tyler loved music, which was the catalyst for his relationship with the band Imagine Dragons. One of his favorite lyrics during the time he was battling cancer comes from the song “It’s Time,” which says the road to heaven runs through miles of clouded hell. When the band heard about this, they dedicated the song to him at a show – this was the beginning of a long friendship. For more information, visit

Hard Rock Cafe Super Bowl

We already know that every sports bar in town is going to be packed this coming Sunday, February 5th for the “Big Game” when the Patriots battle the Falcons at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.  Every year, we use this space to mention a few places that support the local music scene throughout the year and also to do something special for Super Bowl Sunday.  We are pleased to have recently updated this page with the latest offerings for 2017.

Marina 84 Sports Bar in South Fort Lauderdale offers more than 40 HD TVs both Indoors & on the Patio along with a 90″ screen  in stage area so you won’t miss a single play! Purchase your ticket in advance and reserve front row seats, enjoy the amenities of a true VIP with unlimited Select Premium Bar, a BIG Game Buffet, & More.  The Big Game Buffet includes Marina 84’s Famous Wings, Fiesta Nachos, Mac n Cheese,  Chicken Alfredo Pasta,  Hand-Cut & Breaded Chicken Tenders, Caesar Salad, Hearty Beef Sliders, Brownies & Cookie dessert.  There  will also be prize giveaways in every quarter.

Downtown Fort Lauderdale’s newest venue for Sports and Live Music won’t let you down on the most important day of the year for sports fans.  Festivities begin as early as 3pm at The Tilted Kilt.  $50 all you can drink Bud Light or Shock Top and plenty of other drink specials including $3 fireball, jager and Lemon drops. 100+ TVs plus a huge video wall on one side of this modern Irish-themed sports bar and projection screen on the other so there won’t be a bad seat in the house! You’re still advised to call for reservations. (954) 763-5458

Famous for their Sunday Brunch Buffet, Galuppi’s of Pompano Beach is offering a Super Bowl Buffet including Chips and Spinach Dip, Buffalo chicken dip, Beef & queso, Chicken Wings, Pulled pork, Sausage and peppers, Baked Ziti and more to keep you filled every down of this spectacular event.  Reserve your seat, get the unlimited buffet and a free drink – all for $25 – this could be the best deal in town!

Your friendly neighborhood Irish Pub & Restaurant, Packy’s Sports Pub of lighthouse point is offering a $20 all-you-can-eat buffet including Wings, Pasta, Meatballs, Salads, Sliders, Queso Dip, Sausage & Peppers and more! As an added bonus, free shots will be given away at the end of the game to anyone who correctly picked the winning team vs. the point spread who was present prior to the first kickoff. Reservations are recommended as space is limited.  Just down the road, also on Federal Highway, you’ll find Brendan’s Sports Pub offering a complete selection of BBQ specialties at various prices including Ribs, Smoked Brisket, Smoked Chicken, Pulled Pork and sides or for a flat $20, help yourself to a 14″ St. Louis Style Pizza including a bottle of wine or bucket of domestic beer!

Next on the “hit” list is a quaint spot literally walking distance from Bokampers Sports Bar & Grill near the North end of Fort Lauderdale Beach. I’m talking about Fishtales Restaurant & Nightclub.  No, they are not a sports-bar but have conveniently equipped their restaurant with large flat-screen televisions in every corner, outside on the patio and a projection large screen pulls down over the stage for the weekly NFL Sunday ticket so they might be the best place in town to see the game without the crowds of a typical sports bar.   Cathy & Scott, who who own and manage the place will not be outdone by their neighbor down the road so they have put together 3 party package deals: $40 All-You-Can Drink from kickoff to game end. For $55, they’ll include an Italian dinner special.  For an extra $10, you can make it a Prime Rib dinner. Keeping with their reputation as a hotspot for live music, they will also feature The Crush band to keep the party going long after the game is over (and you won’t get stuck in traffic as everyone is heading home!)

Lastly, Premier Billiards in Coral Springs has vowed to maintain their Sunday specials even if it is Super Bowl Sunday.  Purchase 2 drinks (alcoholic) and play pool for free all day.  Or take advantage of their $14.99 Pitcher of Beer and plate of 10 chicken wings special.

dropouts new years eve

It’s always amazing to see how bars transform themselves into the cleanest and most classiest places to hang out when it comes to celebrating the New Year! No matter how fancy it gets, you can usually feel comfortable in your best or your worst pair of jeans and be perfectly welcome at any of the places on this list.  For some of us, the best thing about going to a bar on New Year’s Eve is that you don’t have to take a date.  While it can be embarrassing for some people to attend a New Year’s ball or masquerade party at a swank place all alone, you really don’t have to worry about that when it comes to the places on our list.  With few exceptions, you won’t break the bank with cover charges or entry fees.  In fact, most of the places we surveyed will even throw in a free glass of champagne and maybe some noise-makers at the stroke of midnight. One bar, Cagney’s Saloon in Davie, even offers a free breakfast buffet!

dropouts new years eveWe, in South Florida, are privileged to have so many talented musicians in our midst that are so dedicated to their artistry that they will give up a special night with their significant others or families to entertain us at local pubs and restaurants – although a few extra bucks doesn’t hurt either!  Call it dedication if you will, but the bars and restaurants around town see it as one last opportunity to bring patrons to their establishments in the middle of the week when their places are usually half-empty on a Wednesday night.

Although this list is, by no means 100% complete, I can honestly recommend that you check out the beautiful flyers that will be streaming across your screen on the Weekend Broward Events Around Town page.  You should also find more listings on the calendar for Broward County on the Live Music Events page.  Look for the asterisk (*) as a reminder to click on the event notes. Whether you decide to go out or stay in, let me take this opportunity to thank you for supporting live music in and around Fort Lauderdale and wish you all the best in 2015!
