Cinco de Mayo Tijuana Taxi

Being that Cinco de Mayo falls on the same day as Taco Tuesday, you would think that every bar in town would be celebrating! However, putting together a comprehensive list was not as easy as some of the other holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day or Halloween due to the festivities being centered around many places that do not usually offer live music on a weekly basis.  That’s where connections in social media come into place – I asked friends of The Weekend Concierge to help me out and received many suggestions via Facebook.  I also looked at previous years Cinco de Mayo blogs which helped too.

Simply having a special on Corona’s and Margarita’s wasn’t enough to make this list.  The celebration had to be a real “event” with live music.  A Live Mariachi Band, Mexican fare and festivities beyond the confines of the 4 walls helped too.

To make the experience of finding just the right place to go on 5/5/2015, I assembled flyers from all the Cinco de Mayo celebrations around town that met my qualifications.  The list will be updated as we approach the hours leading up to May 5th so keep checking back and check the live music calendars for exact times for bands will be playing at these events.

st patricks day

Every year, bars and taverns all over the world get into full-fledged party-mode to celebrate the life of Saint Patrick who passed away on March 17th of the year 461.  According to Wikipedia, Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in Ireland, Newfoundland (Canada), and Montserrat, a British island located in the Lesser Antilles.  The holiday is also widely celebrated in Great Britain, United States, Canada, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand.  To celebrate the patron saint of Ireland, followers hold parades and festivals, play Gaelic folk music and dancing, wear lots of green and use the shamrock symbol in all decorations.

Soulicide March 13This year, St Patrick’s Day falls on a Tuesday.  Authentic Irish Pubs and Die-Hards will celebrate from early morning with breakfast and beer until late night followed by more breakfast in the wee hours.  However, you don’t have to wait until Tuesday to get your “green on”.  Cagney’s Saloon is getting started on the night of Friday the 13th with local Rock Cover Band SOULICIDE. They will be offering food and drink specials including Irish Car Bombs and shots of Jameson (what else?!).  The City of Fort Lauderdale will celebrate on Saturday, March 14th beginning with a 4-Mile “Shamrock Run” at 7:30am followed by live music and a parade at Noon.  Read all about it at weekendbroward.com/events/st-patricks-parade-festival-fort-lauderdale-2015.  On the same day, further North, the City of Delray Beach  will present their St Patrick’s Day Parade,  2pm–4:30pm, followed by a short concert of Bagpipe bands performing on the Great Lawn at Old School Square for a “Military Tattoo”.  More post-parade activities are planned at the Center for the Arts, located on the corner of Swinton and Atlantic Avenue including a concert by The Livesays from 3:45pm till 7pm.

The next day, the City of Hollywood will get their celebrations started with a parade at 1pm followed by live music on stage plus roving performances by the NYPD Emerald Society Pipe & Drum Corps.  Read all about it at weekendbroward.com/events/st-patricks-day-parade-festival-hollywood.

Finally, you can go to work on Monday but make plans to drop into any of the following places on the REAL St. Patrick’s Day where you’ll enjoy LIVE MUSIC and maybe some corned beef & cabbage at the following places:

Live Entertainment Schedule at Local Pubs & Restaurants on Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

Mainstreet at Athena by the Sea in Lauderdale by the Sea 6:30pm

The Flyers at Brendan’s Sports Pub in Pompano Beach 7:00pm

Peace Out (trio) at Kingshead Pub in Pompano Beach 7:30pm

Bounce at Packy’s Sports Pub in Lighthouse Point 8:00pm (see ad below)

Grindstone at Tijuana Taxi Co. in Coral Springs 8:00pm

The Fusion Band at Fishtales on 33rd in Ft Lauderdale 8:00pm

Gimme-5 Unplugged at Kelly Brothers Irish Pub in Fort Lauderdale 8:00pm

Down Durty Boyz at Cuddy’s Sports Shack in Coconut Creek 8:30pm

United State of Rock at Whiskey Tango in Hollywood 9:00pm

Bungled & Botched Reunion at Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood 9:30pm (See ad below)

I’m not sure about the bands because they are probably AUTHENTIC Irish but judging from past years, you’ll find two HUGE OUTDOOR celebrations going in Broward – one at The Field Irish Pub in Dania Beach and the other at Maguire’s Hill 16 in Fort Lauderdale.  Parking might be a challenge due to the vast numbers of people who are expected to attend each of these with Indoor AND Outdoor activities going on all day long.

You’ll find all the above and more listed at www.weekendbroward.com/live-music/ with more choices for South Palm Beach County available too!

hard rock rising

2015  marks the 7th year that the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood Florida participates in Hard Rock Rising global battle of the bands.  More than 400 bands submitted registration via Reverbnation to participate in the local battle which gets under way during the month of April at the Hard Rock Cafe located inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.  12 bands from Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties were selected to participate. Three bands will play each Friday night in April at the Cafe with the local finale to take place on May 1st.

Each band will perform a set of 3 original songs and one song covered by a previous Hard Rock Calling band.  Hard Rock Calling was a music festival sponsored by Hard Rock Cafe international between 2006 and 2013 which featured some of the biggest names in Rock including  The Killers, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, The Who, Bon Jovi, Roger Waters (with Nick Mason), The Police, Aerosmith, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen.  Bands will be judged locally by three local industry experts based on originality, musicianship, vocal skills and fan appreciation.

Butterfly Festival Outdoor Concerts

If you’re looking for some great free outdoor entertainment in the next few months, just follow the trail of Food Trucks which often accompany the live music and family friendly events which go hand in hand at parks and amphitheaters administered by cities such as Sunrise, Margate, and Parkland.  By using the Food Truck calendar  found on this website and event blogs I found on FoodTrucksFortLauderdale.com, I was able to piece together the following cheat sheet for outdoor concerts around Broward over the coming months.

Saturday, September 19 – Studio 54 (Disco)

City of Coconut Creek

The City of Coconut Creek offers two upcoming opportunities to experience great entertainment on an outdoor stage.  The community center usually has only one food truck on site each month.  The Butterfly Festival is an annual affair with many vendor booths on site and multiple bands playing all day long.

City of Lauderhill

The City of Lauderhill has two venues which they are using for providing live entertainment to residents.  A Small stage is situated at the Amphitheatre of the Lieberman Botanical Gardens at 3801 Inverrary Blvd.  They have been holding “Jazz Picnic in the Park” there since last December. Tribute Band Concerts will take place at the much larger Lauderhill Sports Park at 7500 W. Oakland Park Blvd.

City of Hollywood

Lastly, Kudos to the City of Hollywood for organizing outdoor concerts large and small at three different venues they operate.  My personal favorite is ArtsPark located at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood.  Here is a sampling of what you can expect to see coming up in the months ahead:

City of Hollywood ArtsPark

Saturday, March 21 – ArtsPark Experience: Americana featuring the Wood Brothers
