Boston Strong Delray BeachBoston’s on the Beach in Delray has held a legendary tie to its namesake city for over 30 years.  If you’ve ever been to Boston’s, you know that those ties to the city hold a special place in the hearts of those that own and patron the beach-side restaurant.  Since the tragic events of the Boston Marathon in April hit so close to home, Boston’s has decided to host a fundraising event for The One Fund on Wednesday, June 26th @ 6PM.  The event will be ongoing throughout the night and include live local music, special pricing on drinks/food, giveaways and a silent auction.  The proceeds raised will go to benefit the victims and families of the horrific events from the Boston Marathon.

The ‘patriot’ message is quite clear – “we all look for a way to help others”.  That’s exactly why Boston’s chose to host this gathering of family and friends along with their spirit of giving to others.  Event supporters include ESPN 760/106.3, Palm Beach Runners, Palm Beach Marathon Training, Boca Road Runners and Alpine Jaguar of Ft Lauderdale.  Local businesses, elected officials and patrons are all invited to join Boston’s in ‘standing strong’.

As if a gathering of friends and family wasn’t enough, a superb lineup of local bands are each donating 45 minute sets as your evening’s entertainment.  What a great way to see so much of South Florida’s musical talent under one roof AND support a wonderful cause.

In no scheduled order of appearance, check out the list of local bands that have donated their time for this event:

  • McGowan’s Chair
  • The Amber Leigh Band
  • Funkabilly Playboys
  • Blues Dragon
  • Famous Frank Ward and the Blue Tuesday All-Stars

Each band is local to the scene and will be sharing their rock, blues and country roots that are sure to keep the crown in good spirits throughout the night!

There is a suggested $10 donation at the door which will go solely to The One Fund.  That’s FIVE bands in one place with your donations helping the families of those affected by tragedy.  It sort of makes you smile to know that so many people can come together and just GIVE.

FAU Summer Band Mizner Park

Crazy FingersI was going to write a long blog all about how families should enjoy Live Music on Father’s Day, but Sundays are not the busiest days for local bands.  Instead, I am forced to check out the WeekendBroward live music calendar and see who is playing where, regardless of what kind of a special day this may be for some lucky dads.

I’ll work my way down from North to South, starting with Delray Beach, where every Sunday, you will find a tribute to The Grateful Dead courtesy of Crazy Fingers.  They play each Sunday evening, starting at 7:30pm at Bostons on the Beach.   Also in Delray Beach, if you like the artsy look and feel of Kevro’s Art Bar and enjoy the outdoor patio, check out their weekly jam starting at 4pm.

FAU Summer Band Mizner ParkHeading South to Boca Raton, you WILL find a special event only this Sunday at the Mizner Park Amphitheatre.  The City of Boca Raton will sponsor a special Father’s Day concert with FAU’s Summer Concert Band from 6pm-7:30pm.   Bring your blankets and chairs.  Food and beverages will be available for purchase – you cannot bring your own.

In Fort Lauderdale, you can enjoy solo and duo musicians at Bimini Boatyard right off the 17th Street Causeway.   Combine the vocals of Liz Sharp with brunch from 11am-3pm along with a great view of the Fort Lauderdale waterway and you’ve got a perfectly romantic place to spend Father’s Day!

Robert Darmanin Calamity JaneNot far from the Fort Lauderdale airport, you will find Flossie’s Bar & Grill where the biker’s hang out  every Sunday afternoon.  On Father’s Day, you can expect to see Calamity Jane, a local cover band featuring classic rock from the 80’s.  A touching story I heard is that the drummer, Robert Darmanin, took up his instrument to carry on the dreams of  his son who passed away suddenly only a few years ago.

Further South, in Hallandale, you will always find a Country & Western band playing at The Mardi Gras Casino, from 7pm-11pm every Sunday.  On Father’s Day, you can expect to see local country music cover band, Sucker Punch, not to be mixed up many other local cover bands by the same name that plays Rock!

If I see any more last minute additions, I’ll add them to the calendar at www.weekendbroward.com.

If all else fails, there’s always the Heat game at your local sports bar!

Have a Happy Father’s Day everyone!
