The young New Orleans native began playing the saxophone at the age of 7, and was granted a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music by the time he was 16. His unique style is comprised of jazz, hip hop, soul, electronic, funk, R&B, blues and reggae.
Royal has played with hip-hop giants and jazz and funk legends alike, including Bobby Brown Alvin Batiste, and Jason Marsalis. He has also recorded with chart-topping artists like Mary J. Blige, Ashanti, Nelly and The Game, and Erykah Badu, in addition to working with prominent New Orleans artists.

Rockin’ Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, The Meters,WAR, J. Geils Band, Clifton Chenier, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Jake has conjured up this formula that is blowing crowds away from coast to coast. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year include clubs, concert venues, and festivals.
Based out of New Orleans since 1990, Rockin’ Jake relocated since being flooded out by Hurricane Katrina, then settled in St. Louis and now lives in Southern Florida.Originally from the East Coast, the “blues bug” bit at an early age for Jake. He immersed himself in the thriving regional blues scene, which boasted such talents as Roomful of Blues, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard and Sugar Ray. Primarily self-taught, Jake briefly studied with Jerry Portnoy, harmonica player for Muddy Waters.
In 1990, when Jake moved to New Orleans where he began to work with such notable New Orleans mainstays as: blues diva Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Coco Robicheaux, Little Freddie King, Tommy Ridgley, Eddie Bo and other local legends. During this time Jake also toured nationally with G. Love & Special Sauce, blues and pop legend Maria Muldaur as well as logging international miles with bluesman T.J, Wheeler. He was selected to perform in an all-star band featuring blues legends Pinetop Perkins and Hubert Sumlin at the Howlin’ Wolf.
In 1995 he formed the Rockin’ Jake Band as an outlet for his original music and his unique swampy sounds. One year later Jake recorded his debut CD, “Let’s Go Get ‘Em” (on Rabadash Records) which earned him national acclaim.

The Orlando-based ensemble fuses genres ranging from funk, rock, reggae, and drum & bass, creating an original sound that can be felt as well as heard. The drummer extraordinaire and son of legendary jazz bassist Chubby Jackson, returns to Arts Garage for another high-energy performance. His distinct swinging style combined with his enthusiasm and wit is a show that all jazz fans should experience. He has performed with legendary artists including Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Carter.

The Cuban born and Spanish based pianist is a Latin Grammy nominee who is recognized as one of the most talented and influential pianists of his generation. Melon formed The Cuban Swing Express after many years of touring the world with different artists. The group is comprised of 10 of the most talented Cuban musicians living in Europe, combining a mix of traditional and bold new sounds with a repertoire of compositions by Perez Prado, Benny Moré, reworked Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson and Rolling Stones songs, as well as Melon’s own compositions. The John Daversa Big Band is one of the leading forces of large ensemble jazz today. Comprised of the world’s finest musicians, the band’s current project explores the vast catalog of The Beatles through Daversa’s imaginative, genre-fusing arrangements. The CD Release features longtime collaborator and world renowned vocalist, Renee Olstead on this unique edition of Beatlemania through Daversa’s creative lens. Daversa’s celebrated and distinctive musical perspective has been a passport to performances on The Today Show, Late Nite with David Letterman, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and he has also performed with top artists like Michael Bublé, Sheryl Crow, and The Yellowjackets.
Mack Sisters – Fri. Sept. 16, 8pm / CLASSICAL PIANISTS
The award-winning Japanese-born pianists, Yuki and Tomoko Mack (current residents of Michigan), have dazzled audiences on three continents. From Bach to Piazzolla, their diverse repertoire includes a broad range of four-hands piano music and orchestral works. Together, the Mack Sisters have won top prizes in several international piano competitions, including the first “Kodama” prizes at the “International Piano Duo Competition” in Tokyo. In 2006 they were selected as Steinway Artists – joining an impressive roster of world renown pianists.
The sisters have performed throughout the world, both at piano festivals and on radio programs, and were even featured as guest artists on PBS. Motivated by their passionate belief of music’s ability to empower the human spirit, they have developed Master-Classes and Community Outreach Programs that are very popular with students and audiences.
