The Pompano Beach Cultural Center is looking to discover the next Class Clown! If your comments get lots of LMAO’s and you always leave a room smiling, then you just might have what it takes to open the November 25th concert featuring Tony! Toni! Toné! with Dru Hill and Sisqo at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater. Those interested in participating must submit a 3-minute YouTube video showcasing their comedy skills with an arts related theme.

UPDATE 8-24-2017: This contest has been canceled

“One of the missions we have set forth at the Cultural Center is to nurture and showcase the best regional talent,” said Alyona Ushe, President and CEO of The Creatives. “Today, comedy is one of the most competitive entertainment fields; Class Clowns will provide a tremendous opportunity for an emerging artist to bring their act to the big stage.”

The competition will be conducted in a similar format to Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre, with monthly showcases being held at the Cultural Center leading up to the November 25th concert.

“A committee will review the submitted videos, and the top contenders will be invited to perform at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center,” explained Sarahca Peterson, Creative Liaison. Audience reaction will be a strong component in judging the contestants. The winner will be invited to compete at the next month’s showcase leading to the final showdown where the winner will be selected.”

At each competition, those placing first, second and third will move to the next round of competition leading to the finals. In addition to the Grand Prize, there will be other prizes awarded including passes to shows and opportunities to host future Class Clown comedy nights and other special events.

The Grand Prize winner will open for Tony! Toni! Toné, whose contribution to music is most certainly legendary: regarded the world over as a talented, authentic group of musicians who made some of the best R&B music of the 80’s and 90’s. From fun, upbeat, smash hits like “Feels Good,” to blues-leaning classics like “The Blues” to their signature love ballads like “Anniversary,” the sound of Tony Toni Toné is soulful and organic. Their ability to create songs that perfectly married the stylings of the soul and funk gods of the 70’s with the technology and hip-hop infused R&B of the 90s made them icons of their generation.

Submission details can be found at

The first Class Clowns showcase will take place August 31th at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, followed by September 21, October 5 and the final round on October 26th. Tickets for the show are $15. The shows will be hosted by Fefe, the Comedian.

The City of Pompano Beach is pleased to welcome Congressman Ted Deutch as he joins Mayor Lamar Fisher, the City Commission, and the City Manager to formally announce an award of the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Our Town grant for the Pompano Beach Crossroads project.  Congressman Alcee Hastings will be represented by Community Outreach Representative Daniel Mulieri.   The Pompano Beach Crossroads project aspires to create and connect public art and performance art along a one-mile “trail” from the new Pompano Beach Cultural Center and Broward County Library, through historic commercial “Old Town Pompano” and along Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to the Interstate-95 overpass. The multi-media project will create interactive connections between the Cultural Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts (BaCA) and Ali Cultural Arts (Ali) utilizing public art, performance art, “drop-in” activities, literary events and digital projections with built-in “augmented reality.”

The City of Pompano Beach is one of 89 organizations nationwide to be awarded the 2017 grant and will receive $100,000 in project funding from the NEA.  Pompano Beach Crossroads is a collaborative project of the City, the Creative Arts Collaborative, and the Pompano Beach CRA.  The program will kick off with community planning phases this fall, and the grant will fund activities through September 2019.

Since 2010, the City of Pompano Beach and its Community Redevelopment Agency have worked with the community and public/private sector partners to create economic development, including targeted Cultural Arts activity in its new Creative Arts District, an area totally within a half mile of a planned future commuter rail station on the historic Florida East Coast Railway.  Pompano Beach Crossroads will be a culmination of these efforts.

The project supports both the City’s Cultural Arts Master Plan and Public Art Master Plan.

The event will take place at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, 50 W. Atlantic Blvd., on Tuesday, August 22nd at 10:00am.  The event is free and open to the public and will include a brief program of live entertainment and refreshments. RSVP’s appreciated at

We’re not sure if the term “Music Under the Stars” is actually trademarked by anyone so we’ll just use it loosely to indicate outdoor concerts before or after sunset and in this case, within the city of Pompano Beach.  Here are a few choices taking place during the month of August:

3 Places to Dance Under the Stars in August

  1. The City of Pompano Beach with the help of Vista Motor Co. sponsors a monthly free concert on the corner of Atlantic Blvd and literally the beach at an area coined as “The Great Lawn” even though it’s really sand.  You can find it easily by searching for The Briny Pub in Pompano Beach since it’s within spitting distance.  The only “concert” taking place during the month of August will take place on August 11th at 7pm and feature a relatively new Heart tribute band appropriately titled “All Heart“.  For more details, call (954) 786-4111.
  2. The Pompano Beach Amphitheater, aka The Amp, also have only one concert during the month of August and you’ll need to buy tickets for this one.  The I Love the 90’s Tour consists of All-Star Acts Including Salt N Pepa, Vanilla Ice, Coolio, Young MC.  (NOTE: Rob Base, Tone Loc & All-4-One are no longer scheduled to appear).   Read more on our earlier posting. Tickets: $25-$128 via or 954-519-5500
  3. Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio-Bar also offers free concerts on their outdoor stage every Friday and Saturday night.  Here’s their schedule for the month of August:
  • August 4 – AM12 (After Midnight) tribute to Eric Clapton
  • August 5 – Vertigo tribute to U2
  • August 11 – Spred the Dub (Reggae Band)
  • August 12 – Jimmy Stowe & The Stowaways tribute to Jimmy Buffett
  • August 18 – The Wildfire Band featuring Randi Fishenfeld on Electric Violin
  • August 19 – Jaded tribute to Aerosmith
  • August 25 – Smokin’ Aces (Rock Party Band)
  • August 26 – Shane Duncan (Rock Party & Country)

Pembroke Pines, FL…. July 6, 2017….ROCKIN’ attracted record crowds to the opening Art Exhibition and Reception at Studio 18 in the Pines. The Art Exhibition featuring the world’s most popular Rock Stars including Keith Richards, U2, Gloria Estefan, Eddie Van Halen, Roger Daltry, Kiss, and The Gibb brothers is open to visitors through August 2, 2017.

For the fourteen artists whose work is on exhibit, ROCKIN’ is far more than a simple nostalgic trip back to the mid to late twentieth century. Artists captured the art of music in images as the musicians from the 1960-90’s Rock n’ Roll Era were unknowingly on the verge of becoming musical icons.  In this ROCKIN’ review of history, the following artists used their skills in photography, oils, and mixed media to showcase the art of Rock n’ Roll:  Ana Aguerrevere, Lisa Botto Lee, Florencia Clement de Grandpre, Ken Davidoff, Gloria Estafan, The Gibb Family, Laurence Levine, Reinaldo Lozano, Larry Marano, Pamela Palma, Alicia Rodriguez, Larry Singer, Dawn V. and Maria Wieder.

“Artistic interpretations capture the heart and soul of a musical era. This is an opportunity to see legendary Rock n’ Roll performers sharing iconic and deeply personal moments of their lives. The Rock n’ Roll Era comes alive for the enjoyment of long-time fans and a new generation of music and art lovers,” commented Michael Edelberg, Curator / Community Engagement Coordinator for Studio 18 in the Pines.

The music of Peter Betan was the perfect complement to an evening filled with appreciation for the music of artists whose unmatched talent is responsible for revolutionizing the way audiences relate to music and the Artists whose contemporary talent captured the sheer enjoyment of Rock n’ Roll performers in their moments of growth, glory, thoughtfulness and excitement.

Studio 18The community and tour groups are welcome to visit the ROCKIN’ Art Exhibition through August 2, 2017 at Studio 18 in the Pines located at 1101 Poinciana Drive in Pembroke Pines.
