Looking around town for something different to do this Memorial Day Weekend? I searched the internet and found many cities where ceremonies will be held during the morning hours to memorialize the brave men and women who fought for our country. However, when the pomp and circumstance is over, many of us will want to either gather together with family and friends and hold a traditional barbecue or take advantage of the extra day off to enjoy our proximity to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. Being that I love local music and expect that you do too, I have been able to find three major local events in Broward and South Palm Beach Counties to share with you.
Saturday, May 25th – 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM – Fort Lauderdale Beach – Great American Beach Party
Head for the beach! Two stages will be set up at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard for a day filled with entertainment for the whole family. Live bands include Across the Universe (Beatles Tribute Band); Tim Bluntson (80’s Tribute Band); The Inverted (Classic Rock); Riverside Dixieland Band (Jazz); Nikki Kidd (R&B); the Bahamas Junkanoo Revue; and Boogie Knights (Disco Revival). A complete schedule can be found on the calendar at www.weekendbroward.com.
The whole family will enjoy a non-stop schedule of activities including a beach water slide, bounce houses, face painting, hula-hoop, limbo and Twister contests, a water balloon toss, and a sandcastle-building competition. For car enthusiasts, there will be a classic car show with more than 50 vintage hot rods, ragtops and muscle cars, plus an art show featuring displays and exhibits from local artists, including up-and coming chalk artists. See this year’s event flyer for more information.
Monday, May 27th – Noon to 7:30 PM Lauderdale by the Sea – Memorial Day Beach Bash
Every memorial day, the Aruba Beach Café in Lauderdale by the Sea sponsors a day-long event right on the beach where Commercial Boulevard meets A1A. Last year’s event featured fun activities for both adults and children alike. Booths were set up to promote local vendors and charities. This year’s party should be just as big as ever with tents setup on the beach to accommodate the abundance of new customers and a complimentary Pig Roast buffet to feed the masses. A stage will be the center of attention on the beach featuring live bands Twocan Blue, The Buster Leggs Band and “South Florida’s Longest Running Rockin’ Blues Band” The Fabulous Fleetwoods. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit and sunscreen to this event!
Monday, May 27th – 7pm-9pm Boca Raton – Mizner Park Memorial Day Concert
The City of Boca Raton is sponsoring a concert featuring The New Gardens Band, The Indian River POPS, and The Robert Sharon Chorale. The New Gardens Band and sister group The Indian River Pops Orchestra are non-profit regional community bands based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The Robert Sharon Corale is a community organization which strives to present the best of all types of choral music – both Sacred and Secular. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs, sit back, relax and enjoy the music. Food and beverages will be available for sale at the Amphitheater.
If you love live music, but prefer smaller crowds, check out the Live Music Events Calendar at WeekendBroward.com for the most up to date listing of which bands will be playing where from Delray Beach down to Hollywood, hour by hour, every day of the week.by
