A four-time Blues Music Awards nominee, Katz has played as a sideman on more than 70 albums with artists such as Ronnie Earl, John Hammond, Delbert McClinton, and Gregg Allman. Katz mixes new angles and influences with traditional blues creating a style all his own.

February 13: Blues Blood. Joel DaSilva has blues running through his veins. He was born in Chicago and grew up in a musical family. His mother sang, and his father played guitar. By the time he was 18, DaSilva had his own band. His high-energy blues has been described as Johnny Cash meets Elvis at a Stevie Ray Vaughan concert.

February 20: The Red Hots and Blues. JP Soars got hooked on the blues as a teenager after meeting the legendary B.B. King. As an International Blues Challenge winner, Soars now has his own following. The Boston’s on Beach audience can expect two sets. Soars will begin with his acoustic gypsy blues band, then kick things up a notch with his band the Red Hots. Hearts will soar with the mesmerizing guitar licks and unique vocals.

February 27: Barefoot Blues. Selwyn Birchwood, another International Blues Challenge winner, ranks among the most extraordinary young stars in the business. As he roams the stage barefoot, Birchwood rips memorable guitar arrangements, winning over audiences with his innate storytelling. Gypsy Queen

Miami-based Gypsy Queen has officially reunited after many years in 2017.  Originally fronted by the powerhouse Mattioli twins, Paula and Pamela Mattioli, the band now features a single vocalist in Paula Mattioli.  Although the band had performed together a few times in recent years at reunion events in Miami, it was the sudden passing of Pamela from an undiagnosed heart condition in 2014 that became the catalyst for the band’s formal reunion, culminating in what has become a beautiful tribute to their late vocalist.

“Gypsy Queen was only ever apart because of location.  Pam and I lived in Los Angeles, and the guys still live in Miami, but we would always get together with them whenever we were there,” says Paula.  “We had done a few reunion gigs with them in Miami over the last few years.  At the last reunion, after Pam passed, we performed a song written for her and people really liked it, so we decided to record the song.  When I was in the studio singing it, it was very raw and very emotional and I started crying.  You can hear that at the end of the song (Pam’s Song).  When I came out of the booth, the guys all hugged me and we had a real moment.  I realized at that point we had to make another record!”

She continued, “The writing was effortless!  Scotty Migone (guitarist)  flew out to Los Angeles to write with me. He knew I was hurting a lot after the loss of my sister and my marriage.  We wrote about 25 songs in two and a half days.  They were just pouring out. I really thank him, because he threw me a lifeline by doing that.”

The new music tells the stories of love, loss and heartbreak, pain, anger and acceptance. These relatable themes about the messiness of life are wrapped up in music that is intricate and interesting, evoking the the emotion and intensity of life that knocks you down, and the resolve it takes to get back up again.

The new album boasts 14 songs ranging from hard and heavy to heart-rending, with influences of 70’s funk, 80’s metal and alt-pop/rock discernible within the collection.  “Our sound has evolved a bit. It’s still rocking, but with more colors and more facets,” says Paula.  “Every one of us has been through stuff, and that’s what this music came from.  All that stuff, it’s going to come out in the music.  If it doesn’t, the music’s not real.  All of these songs are written from emotion and that’s the way we recorded it.  It was definitely a catharsis making this record.”

GYPSY QUEEN has set January 12, 2018 as the official release date of the self-titled new studio album via Royal Ball Records.  A CD Release party will take place on the same day at Premier Billiards & Sports Club located at 9120 Wiles Rd. in Coral Springs.  There will be plenty of room for everyone and there’s no cover charge to attend.  The event will also feature cover band, Monster, which includes two members from Gypsy Queen.  Follow updated via the Facebook event page.

Bostons on the Beach

Blue Tuesdays at Boston’s on the Beach will be full of flavor in January 2018 with a lineup of performers to fit every taste. Take the Delray Beach oceanfront view, add free music, mix in drink specials and great food, and you get the perfect way to spend a Tuesday night.

January Blue Tuesdays’ performances:

JL FulksJanuary 2: Change of Tune. JL Fulks started playing guitar at age 13. He was inspired by his father’s love of the blues. Fulks made a name for himself playing in rock bands until a few music courses opened his heart to the blues. In 2016, the JL Fulks Band won South Florida’s Regional Blues Challenge. He is currently on an international tour.

January 9: Triple Threat. Rachelle Coba is a songwriter, singer, and guitar player. Her skill and intensity set her apart from the pack. This soul-gripping songstress has the ability to capture an audience and hold them spellbound throughout her performance.

Rockin JakeJanuary 16: The Best of the Beat. Rockin’ Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. He’s conjured up his own sound, which is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues, and zydeco. Jake and his band pour their souls into every performance, consistently bringing the audience to their feet. He is a five-time winner of OffBeat Magazine’s coveted Best of the Beat award for best harmonica player.

Tas CrusJanuary 23: Blues Poetry. Tas Crus is considered one of the most unique bluesmen in the trade. His paradoxical performances are described as raucous and rowdy, yet gentle and sweet. While Crus describes himself as a storyteller, Down Beat magazine calls his music “blues poetry.” The passion and power Tas Crus brings to the stage leaves his audience intoxicated.

Joey GilmoreJanuary 30: Best of the Blues. Joey Gilmore taught himself to play guitar at an early age and began performing soon after. His band of youths played in local clubs they were too young to legally enter. He became a popular figure on the blues scene accompanying famous names like James Brown, Etta James, Bobby Bland, Little Milton, and Johnny Taylor.
