“This is our 17th Annual FINNEGAN’S WAKE and people just love it, it’s become a local tradition, it’s great fun and a spoof of an “Old Fashioned Irish Wake”, of which the real meaning is “a tribute and a true celebration of life!” says Owner and Producer for the past 17 years, Connie Davis. Every year they come, decked out in their Irish finery, to watch the annual ritual, one of the most unusual events they have ever seen, “FINNEGAN’S WAKE” and believe it or not…the Police escort with sirens lead the Hearse with “Poor Ol’ Tim Finnegan’s” Coffin, accompanied by 6 Pallbearers, followed by the mournful sound of the Pipes & Drums and a parade of the most hilarious cast of characters, all in costume, the Pope “AM Dave” of Streeters Bar in his Popemobile, the Mayor of Ft. Liquordale is Michael Mulvehill, the weeping Widow and her Priest are Mike & Lauren O’Hanlon of the Ruff House Pet Store, the Naughty Nun “Sister Megan Holy Water” of the Fountains in LBTS, St. Patrick tis himself is Mark O’Connor, Mother McGillicuddy is Mary Held Pace, Irish Princess is Gillian McCann of Ireland, Mrs. Kat O’Leary and her Cow is Kathy McKenzie of Barrett’s Sports Bar, the Grand Leprechaun “Darrell House” and the Leprechaun Brigade, including Barbara “Muffin” McCombs of the Big Dog Station, Peter Kelly of Kelly Bros. Pub, Bobby & Gerry Streeter of Streeters, all friends in the Hospitality Industry and of course, the mourners and weepers, hundreds of them, lining the street, patiently waiting the arrival of Finnegan, one of Ireland’s finest and there isn’t a dry eye in the crowd.
Serving up the Best Corned Beef & Cabbage in town, Guinness, 3 bars, continuous Irish music by Joe Dougherty and his Black Velvet Band, a performance by the Pipers, some good old fashioned Irish Sing-A-Longs and plenty of Shenanigan’s to go around!
And now…. the sirens from the Police Motorcycle escort are blaring, the Pipers are leading and the Hearse is arriving, the crowd waits patiently while the six Pallbearers slowly remove the Coffin and carry it to the outside Tiki Bar, the Coffin is opened and finally, there he is, “Tis Himself, poor ol’ Tim Finnegan” and the mourners begin to file past for a look and a prayer. You can hear them whisper, “Ah, he looks a tad better than he did last year”! Connie Davis said, “With the Irish music blaring, …everyone sings “When Irish Eyes Are Smilin’”……and this is when you realize that there is no one, no, there is no one, that knows how to throw a party……….quite like the Irish!”
