Sherry & Pat Palmer are the proud owners of a neighborhood bar that has a reputation reaching much farther than the local community in which they are located – a low profile strip of shops along Federal Highway in Pompano Beach. Their Wednesday night bike nights are infamous for attracting both bikers and fans of live music from all over South Florida who come to enjoy the bands, inexpensive drinks and free barbecue week in and week out, usually rain or shine. Sherry and Pat are also responsible for organizing gatherings, whether it be an engagement party, a cancer fundraiser or a memorial for a fallen musician, biker or regular customer. With the large number of bars and restaurants in South Florida that offer live music, there isn’t one that matches the generosity of Chit Chats Bar when it comes to giving back to the “community”. As such, it came as a total shock to many that the owners of the plaza are trying to shut down this bar so that they can redevelop the land on which it sits, despite the fact that Chit Chats has a 20-year lease.
Sherry and Pat have no objections to moving Chit Chats to another location, but not without proper compensation for needing to rebuild what they have worked so hard to build after already moving from across the street several years ago. The law should be on their side to remain for the length of their lease or be properly compensated but legal fees can eat up every dime of their personal savings in order to pay for their day in court. This is why the community of musicians who have benefited from the Palmers’ generosity over the years have decided to throw one huge party appropriately at Chit Chats Bar to help defray some of the legal fees needed to support Pat and Sherry during their upcoming court date to plead their case.
According to Sherry Palmer, “these landlords have tried over and over to ‘bully’ us out…. threatening our customers, blocking access to our business, becoming ‘slumlords’ in taking care of our property …. all in an effort to maliciously take over. We have excellent legal representation. We have strength to emotionally take the constant harassment. We need help financially. To fight this battle in the courts is going to cost us thousands that we don’t have… My husband has said for years, that we have run a ‘non-profit’ business, because we were always doing too much….. and now we need legal fees. So we are asking for help.”
All who wish to “give back” are invited to attend a full-day of live music on Sunday, June 26th beginning at 1pm with the Rough Shot band and ending around 10pm with the Riverdown band. Says Sherry Palmer “if we win this case, every dollar that is given to help us – we will donate. We would have the biggest party ever…. choose 2 or 3 or 4 charities that you help us pick and we would donate back every dollar that was donated to us.”
