Free Our Seas and Beyond has partnered with Nova Southeastern University, Broward County, the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC) at the Carpenter House and the City of Hollywood to host the second annual Free Our Seas and Beyond Environmental Art Festival on Saturday, April 20th beginning at 11:00 a.m. Harnessing the power of art and community, the festival emphasizes our
interconnectedness with the ocean through creative and inspiring art. At the inaugural event last year, more than 1,500 visitors enjoyed a sunny day filled with nature inspired exhibits, as well as up-cycled and recycled environmentally themed pieces. “I enjoy being able to educate and offer solutions through art. The exhibits are made entirely of ocean debris from our local beach which gives the community a powerful visual of how everyday choices impact our environment,” says Lillie Carlson, Free Our Seas board member.
The MEEC’s beautiful oceanfront location at the historic Carpenter House is perfect for the celebration at 4414 N Surf Road on Hollywood Beach. The festival kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with a community beach clean-up sponsored by the SURFRIDER Foundation of Broward County. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. original and inspiring works of art will be showcased for all to enjoy. The free, family-friendly event also includes live musical performances, food trucks, children’s activities, environmentally friendly vendors, non-profit ocean conservation zone, a community art installation and more. The must see event of the day is Captain the Sea Turtle’s lunchtime feeding!
Scheduled to appear: Muralists Rei Ramirez, James Brutus and Carlos Solano, Sand Sculptor John May, Free Our Seas artists.TC Trash Art, Teratai Malaysia Batik Community Project; Student clubs and performers from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, South Broward High School, South Plantation High School, Everglades High School and Beachside Montessori Village will be also be involved.
