Where can you enjoy local seafood, browse through endless local vendors AND experience live music? The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival will let you do all of the above at the same time! This year marks the 30th annual return of the jam packed beach area event, sure to satisfy every craving for the very best South Florida locals have to offer. In past years, the festival has covered every inch of the event grounds with local food vendors, craft vendors and topped it all off with live music throughout the three day event. The event kicks off on Friday, April 25th at 5PM and continues until Sunday, April 27th.
On the beach and surrounding streets and parking lots at the Pompano Pier just north of Atlantic Blvd., the festival offers something for everyone who lives the Florida lifestyle. From Seafood World’s “Papa Hughie’s” Raw Bar, to South Beach Grill’s giant Paella, to Billy Spellman’s famous Lobster Roll to Catering Concept’s Jamaican Jerk everything in between, the food court in front of the Pier is always packed with seafood lovers.
Two eclectic arts and crafts areas, one at the festival entrance and the popular Boardwalk Bazaar (set on the festival’s own boardwalk installed on the beach) is a crazy mix of arts and crafts, clothing, kids stiff and just about anything else you can find.
For many, however, it’s all about the music. The Main Stage, on the beach on the north side of the Pier, features top local acts and some of the most famous names in classic rock, headlined in 2013 by The Atlanta Rhythm Section, 38 Special and Rick Derringer. ON the south end is the Community Stage with a variety of local acts. And in between the two stages are two large tents with continuous live music and cold beverages.
Headlining this year’s festival will be Grand Funk Railroad. Originating from Flint, Michigan in 1969 and known as “The American Band”, the high-energy five-piece group includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, We’re An American Band) and bassist Mel Schacher, “The God Of Thunder.” Joining Don and Mel are true “All Stars.” Singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 Special. Max penned and sang 38’s biggest hit “Second Chance” and was co-founder of California’s legendary Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Don refers to Max as “the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet. Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and also has credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier. (KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by Grand Funk.) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master’s degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called “Dr. Tim”, his credits include stints with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and English soul man Robert Palmer.
The Seafood Festival is considered one of South Florida’s most exciting beach parties, with live music, fantastic seafood and the Boardwalk Bazaar, host to arts and crafts vendors. Some of the best local restaurants prepare the fresh catch of the day and offer samples at their kiosks.
Festival entrance is at the Pier parking lot on NE 2nd St., between A1A and Pompano Beach Blvd. A free trolley service is available for those that utilize the parking along Atlantic Blvd, between A1A and the Intracoastal. This is also for those that park in the bank parking lots along Atlantic Blvd. No outside drinks, coolers or pets of any kind are permitted.
Did you know? The Seafood Festival is a non-profit event and revenues benefit a variety of charities and organizations. The event is primarily volunteer- driven which means every detail is from the heart. The festival is its own not-for–profit corporation made up of a variety of local organizations that run the event and receive the proceeds. “It’s all about supporting the community,” says manager John Good. “All of our profits go to our volunteer groups and over the years proceeds have funded hundreds of different worthwhile, local charities.”. Daily admission is $15 while kids under 12 are FREE!
