Broward County Libraries and the City of Hallandale Beach are searching for storytellers ready to win spectacular prizes at The Afro-Caribbean Weekend Fest, #HBCaribbeanFest. The storytelling contest will be held on the festival’s second day, Saturday, June 16th from 2 to 6PM at the Hallandale Beach Library, 300 S Federal Highway, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009.
Grand Prize winner of the Story Slam will receive a one-night weekend stay in a waterview deluxe room at The Diplomat Beach Resort (valued at $500) and a gift card to a local merchant. Second- and third-place winners will receive gift packages from West Elm (valued at $150 each) and a gift card to a local merchant.
The June 16th, Saturday afternoon Story Slam will be a competition held from 2 to 4PM between seven preselected storytellers on the theme of “Island Spice.” Novice or professional, come tell your personal, true story that is five to seven minutes in length. Stories can span the wide range of human experience, from the utterly silly to the deeply profound. A panel of three judges will choose the winners based on presentation, emotional impact and story structure.
The Afro-Caribbean Fest is a free festival to celebrate the diversity of Afro-Caribbean voices, culture and cuisine. Like the storytelling competition, the festival theme is “Island Spice” and the crowd will be treated to a powerful dose coming from authentic Caribbean food truck and street vendors, the Bahamas Junkanoo Shakers, Resurrection Steel Drum Band and DJ Johnnie Powell.
Festival goers will experience virtual reality demos, a healthy food demo by Flipany, live music and dynamic, interactive storytelling. The June 15th, Friday festival night, featuring an interactive storytelling journey with Lucrece Louisdhon-Louinis, takes place from 6 to 8PM at the Foster Park Community Micro-Library, located at 609 NW 6th Ave, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009.
To tell a story at the event contest, submit your story online in advance for preselection at: worldandeye.com/storyslam or call Jeanie Minuchin at 954-540-9897 or contact Helen Reynolds at 954-279-0994 or [email protected] You can also follow the Story Slam on Facebook.
The event is co-sponsored by Broward County Libraries and the City of Hallandale Beach. Additional sponsorship and support is provided by World and Eye Arts Center, West Elm, The Diplomat Beach Resort, and Friends of Hallandale Beach Library.
