“Sometimes a letter is like a prayer, written more for the sender than the receiver,” according to singer and songwriter Alex Woodard. Several years ago, the musician started a project he refers to as “stories with a soundtrack” – songs about handwritten letters that highlight the “extraordinary beauty that ordinary people can create from their trauma.”

Hear Your Letters to Service Members Turned into Song

Alex has produced a number of albums and books, including FOR THE SENDER: Love Letters from Vietnam. The composition was inspired by letters from a soldier in Vietnam to his young wife in East Texas, along with letters written to the serviceman from his daughter. Alex’s songs serve as a tribute to family and love. FOR THE SENDER has received praise from people and publications around the world. Billboard magazine called it – “One of the year’s most touching, unique releases.”

The singer and songwriter is now looking for fresh inspiration. People are encouraged to submit love letters they have sent to and/or received from veterans. Three letters will be chosen, and Alex will perform three new songs during an intimate concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 in West Palm Beach.

The concert will benefit Phoenix Is Rising, a nonprofit created in 2015 to help combat the high suicide and opioid dependency rate among veterans. Phoenix Is Rising offers veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder a yearlong program that kicks off with a weeklong “boot camp” retreat in Sebastian, Florida, where they receive mental health counseling and other forms of holistic treatment, in addition to developing skills for reintegration into their communities, relationships, and families. They also bond with the other attendees. To learn more about the nonprofit, visit

Phoenix Is Rising is a 501(c)(3) charity that provides a yearlong program of structured and holistic therapies, and treatment and support to cohorts of eight veterans at a time. By treating these heroes and providing them with the life-essential coping skills they need, our charity not only helps to transform the veterans, but also educates and informs the wider community. With one voice, we can give a new perspective – both to those who benefit and the people around them.
