Need another reason to go out on a Sunday? Every year, Cinco de Mayo fills South Florida with many events and Mexican-themed celebrations – enough to keep you enjoying the food, the drinks and the music well into the night! This year, May 5th falls on a Sunday, which lets you get out and enjoy the festivities all day and well into the night!
Looking for your fix of true Mexican fare and the sounds of the holiday? You can head to downtown Fort Lauderdale for one or many of the local bars and restaurants offering drink and food specials. Places like Tarpon Bend, Rocco’s Tacos, Original Fat Cats and Tequila Express all have Cinco de Mayo on their minds. Enjoy their take on classic and original Mexican food and kick back with buckets of Corona and overflowing margaritas. Each of the venues will be host to live salsa music inside and outside of the restaurants.
If you prefer a jam packed Cinco de Mayo feast, head on down to ‘Cinco on Second’, where Fort Lauderdale takes the holiday seriously! Tarpon Bend, located on the corner of 2nd avenue and the train tracks will be featuring live salsa music from 2 to 5 PM followed by DJ’s until 10 PM. You can partake in their many games, donkey rides and if you’re feeling brave, enter yourself into their taco-eating contest! Drinks and shot specials will be offered throughout the many venues in the area, so you can walk off your first few stops on your way to the rest of the party!
Over in the Oakland Park area, check out Tequila Sunrise and their annual Cinco de Mayo celebration! Grab a seat at their outdoor bar and enjoy their version of the festivities, authentic Mexican fare and enjoy their live salsa band.
Looking to enjoy the Florida sunset on the Intracoastal while enjoying your fiesta? Check out the sounds of Cinco de Mayo with the Atlantis Duo at Shooters Waterfront. If you’re in the mood to try your luck at the casinos, Mardi Gras in Hallandale will have Mariachi bands on the veranda to celebrate and entertain all ages. While you’re there, catch Shadow Creek inside the casino from 7pm to 11pm for their weekly country-western night.
Prefer to enjoy your day at the beach and head out at night? Two of South Florida’s most popular cover bands will be packing them in Hollywood and Coral Springs! Check out Bounce at Whiskey Tango in Hollywood from 9 PM to 1 AM and Riverdown at Tijuana Taxi in Coral Springs, starting at 8 PM until midnight. If you haven’t had the chance to catch either band lately, you’re in luck because they’ll both be rockin’ on Sunday night!
Prefer to hang out with the biker crowd? Head on down to Flossie’s Bar & Grill in Fort Lauderdale, just West of the airport and catch Shovel~Head performing for their annual Drinko de Mayo party. The show starts at 3:30 and there is a free Mexican buffet along with drink specials kicking off at 5 PM. Wear your favorite ‘Love-In” attire and receive 5% off your tab!
Lest we forget about Boca Raton! Uncle Julio’s plans on taking Cinco de Mayo to a new level this year. They are transforming Mizner Park into a street party, including a taco stand, photo booth, outdoor bars and family fun, this will be a party for all ages! The restaurant will be serving up their classic Mexican dishes for you to enjoy as you listen to their Mariachi band and DJ. Festivities start at 10 AM with activities for the kids, including a face painter and balloon maker. Stay longer and you can enjoy the lightshow after 5PM with the Latin music and dancing!
